Mission The Inria team Alpage conducts research in Digital Humanities (DH), an area at the intersection of computing and the disciplines of the humanities such as History, Literature or Philology. In the recent years, ambitious platforms have been developed for the dissemination of primary data, for instance resulting from mass digitalizations of historical texts, or the production of metadata and knowledge in relation to Arts and Humanities. The availability of these digital resources is creating a new range of opportunities, in particular in conjunction with text and data mining, to help researchers in their projects. Our Inria team is developing or contributing to the several state-of-the-art Open Source projects to address these needs and the explosion of scholarly information. Our approach is, as far as possible, independent from a specific domain and rely on machine learning to avoid costly manual effort. These tools are not only used in research activities, in several European projects, but also by a broader audience, including commercial services. Job offer description The Alpage team of Inria Paris research center is looking for a R&D engineer to work on software developments applied to DH. In collaboration with researchers, the engineer will be involved in developments related especially to text mining, document processing, entities recognition, interoperability, scalability and API design. The work will focus on engineering aspects, such as adding and evaluating new functionalities, improving overall interoperability and performance, in coordination with the members of the team and the existing communities of the open source projects. The position will be the opportunity to improve both engineering skills and practical knowledge of emerging technologies such as machine learning. Skills and profile Engineering diploma, Master degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science. Personal skills: Creativity, autonomy, detail oriented, problem solving, effective communication - technical english mandatory Required technical skills: -Good theoretical background in mathematics and computer science, -Good software engineering skills (specification, build and integration framework, unit and integration tests, documentation, load/performance testing, etc.), -Interest in design patterns and software engineering good-practices, -Knowledge of programming Java and/or Scala, -Knowledge of Github environment, -Markup languages (XML, JSON), - Basic UNIX shell scripting.
