Trained in mathematics, my research is focused on information-processing and constructing mathematical models of knowledge in the cognitive sciences and comes under the framework of acquisition and learning of the lexicon, studied on the basis of language-dictionary graphs.
My research work is multidisciplinary:
Mathematics: Metrology of small-world hierarchical networks; complex systems; representation and modelling of data and knowledge.
Computer Sciences/Information sciences : Visualization; searching data banks; multidimensionality.
Linguistics: Modelling of meanings; polysemy; hyperonymy/hyponymy; metaphor; disambiguation; semantic universals.
What is innovative in my research is showing that the structure of the lexicon of a language (a dictionary graph) operates as "small world"; this enables us to envisage innovative technological applications with respect to accessing information, both for learning the lexicon of a language and for navigating on the semantic web.
Within this framework, I am the coordinator of the group DiLan
research.
